Misoprostol is a prescription drug used widely to prevent as well as treat non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced stomach ulcers, for early abortion, to treat missed miscarriages and to induce labor.
As a prescription drug, Misoprostol finds favour among healthcare professionals since it is cheap, stable, easy to transport as well as administer and unlike many medications, need not be stored under refrigeration.
Chemically speaking, Misoprostol is a synthetic Prostaglandin E1 (Prostaglandins are naturally occurring fatty acids generated by body tissues) analogue, which is responsible for causing myometrial contractions. This medication reduces the amount of acid released by the stomach and thereby protects the stomach lining and minimises the risk of stomach ulcers.
This medication should be taken orally, together with food, four times a day. The final dose of the day should always be administered before retiring for the night. You should also avoid taking any antacids containing magnesium within an hour before or two hours after taking Misoprostol. Women should not take their first dose until after the second or third day of their period to rule out or confirm pregnancy.
Be it any drug, prescribing and administering the right dosage is essential for the successful prevention and treatment of the disease or ailment being addressed. In the case of Misoprostol, the correct dosage depends on gestation, indication and methods of administration.
Women who are allergic to prostaglandins should avoid using this medication. Also women who are using intrauterine devices (IUD) should remove the same before using Misoprostol.
Should you happen to miss a dose of Misoprostol, you should take it as soon as possible. And in case your next dose is due soon, you can skip the missed dose and revert to your regular dosage schedule. Avoid double dosing at all costs.
